EDUCATION IS OUR MISSION!

The Houston Gem and Mineral Society is a tax-exempt, educational organization [501(c)3]. As such, one of our primary missions is earth science and hobby-related education. To do that, we teach adult hands-on classes in wire-wrapping, lapidary, metalsmithing, and faceting, among others. We also teach core earth science classes in mineralogy and paleontology for adults and children. We offer programs specifically aimed at children at our Annual Show and offer college scholarships in the earth sciences and lapidary arts.

On this page you can find a collection of educational videos, fun games and activities, interesting links, and virtual tours.

Paleo Section President Neal Immega has had great success coaching Science Olympiad students. In 2014, his teams won 1st and 7th in the nation in the High School category for Rocks and Minerals. In 2015, his teams won 1st and 10th in the nation in the Middle School category for Paleontology. See our Outreach gallery. In 2023 his team won 3rd in the nation.

It’s actually 40+ shows at various locations around the city. Attending this show can be a life changing event. Vendors come from all over the world to Tucson. You can see items here you are unlikely to see anywhere else. Attending this show can be hazardous to your bank balance.

From LiveScience:

The calcite-encrusted skeleton of an ancient human, still embedded in rock deep inside a cave in Italy, has yielded the oldest Neanderthal DNA ever found.

This fascinating picture combines Geology, Paleontology, Anthropology – and caving!
