Live Wirewrapping, Silversmithing and Cabochon-making Demonstrations by our club member experts happen in our Demo Area as well as in the classrooms in the west hall during Saturday and Sunday of the show.
The HMNS will have crafts and shark’s teeth to give away at their table. The HGS will give demos of the oil and gas extraction process. The Youth Section will have mineral and fossil examples at their table and a host of fun games!
Friday of our annual show is Kids Day for K-12 students. Teachers may bring their classes and parents their homeschool students to the annual show to participate in a FREE extensive, hands-on learning experience. Public/private school teachers and homeschool parents who have 20 or more students may request one of four Annual Show Rock Sets.
Mad Science of Houston educational presentations take place on Friday (Kids Field Trip Day) of the show. They’re a staple of our Kids Day Earth Science Program and one of the highlights of our show.
In addition to the Kids Day Scavenger Hunt Questionnaire, we have an At-Home Economic Minerals Scavenger Hunt version for investigating materials that can be found around the house (it’s listed in the educational activities shown below). Just like our Kids Day Scavenger Hunts, the questions are grade-appropriate and TEKS-based so educators can choose the level of complexity appropriate for their students.
Our annual show features over 40 gem, mineral, jewelry, bead, lapidary, and fossil dealers with unique items from around the world. See below a list of our dealers with links to their websites and social media for a glimpse of what’s to come.

During the show be sure to stop by the Info Booth where you can buy Annual Show Posters, Paleo Books & Lapidary Templates.
Another hot item at the Info Booth is the hourly silent auctions where you can bid on items donated to the HGMS by members as well as our dealers. These items can usually be purchased for a fraction of the retail cost.
Find excellent deals on minerals, fossils, and hand-made cabs and jewelry in this amateur retail area for club members and other rockhounds to sell their excess material. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Swap Area vendors are only allowed to take “swap dollars” in exchange for their specimens and material. Show attendees purchase swap dollars on a 1-to-1 basis for real dollars from the Swap Area cashier. As amateur collectors, this is an important way for Swap Area vendors to upgrade their collections because they can then take the swap dollars they earn and trade them for specimens from retail dealers on the main showroom floor who treat these swap dollars as cash.
Hourly door prize drawings are held at the Info Booth. These items almost exclusively are donated by our dealers for this purpose, so they include a specimen label from the dealer.
Education is our mission, and you can help by volunteering at the annual show. We especially welcome high school and college students who need service hours (don’t forget to bring your form for us to complete).
Fill out the volunteering survey with your interests, skills, and availability and we’ll match you with the perfect tasks!
The HGMS Gem, Jewelry, Mineral, and Fossil Show seeks to raise awareness of Earth Science Education activities in the Houston area and of the importance of Earth Science Education in general. Further objectives include promoting community awareness of the HGMS year-round activities such as field trips, lapidary and fossil cleaning workshops, educational classes, social dinners, auctions, and other facilities and events that are available to our membership. Our special-interest groups known as sections include Lapidary and Silversmithing Section, Gemstones and Faceting Section, Mineral Section, Paleontology (fossil) Section, Beading Section, Archaeology Section, Day Light and Youth Section. The Show also increases club membership, thereby adding to our pool of knowledge and experience, and it funds the club’s year-round nonprofit activities.
