At-Home Economic Mineral Scavenger Hunt

HGMS has compiled a comprehensive Economic Minerals and Rocks Scavenger Hunt that can be completed at home or in the classroom with common school supplies and other ordinary objects. This extensive reimagining of our normal in-person annual show’s scavenger hunt on Kids Day was introduced in 2020 to provide information and activities for 20 rocks and minerals that are used in our lives for economic purposes. Just like the in-show scavenger hunt questionnaires, the at-home version is age-appropriate, meaning that each of the rocks and minerals has a range of questions and activities aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for K through grade 12 and even some college classes.

Although our Economic Minerals and Rocks Set is the inspiration for this at-home or in-class program, the set is not necessary to complete the activities. Classes and homeschool groups with 20 or more students are eligible to receive one of our rock sets by registering for and reserving the set and then attending our free Kids Day at the HGMS Annual Show to receive it.

If you would like to download only a portion of the scavenger hunt for easier lesson plans, we offer the option to download the lessons in thirds:

Economic Rocks and Minerals

The rocks and minerals pictured below are contained in the at-home/in-class Economic Minerals and Rocks Scavenger Hunt. The scavenger hunt question associated with each mineral is immediately above the picture. Feel free to download if you would like to choose which questions you use for your economic mineral lesson.

Happy Teaching!

Remember – Rocks Rule!
