Astrid and Jacob are both degreed Geologists and started their journey together while living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Their love of rocks, adventure and exploration lead them to prospect throughout the states of Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul. Their passion for discovery took them through far-flung villages in the remote countryside. From being lost in the jungle looking for aquamarines, to narrowly escaping gun toting pistoleros in the dried out landscape of the Rio Doce river basin, they were often greeted with the good-natured hospitality from kind-hearted and well-natured miners and their families. Over time, they developed friendships with miners and the mine owners representing Alligator Quartz, Amethyst, Apatite, Aquamarine, Calcite, Emerald, Imperial Topaz, Muscovite and Tourmaline.
As time passed, Astrid and Jacob’s family has grown by two and they started their rock and mineral sales business under the name of Gems In The Rough. They later moved to Katy, Texas and are now proudly bringing their findings and acquisitions to the public through The Katy Rock Shop. While new expeditions bring new adventures, they have developed the connections and network to export truly unique mineral specimens – which rarely become available to the public.
