President's Message

by Jeanean Slamen

January 1st, 2026

As we begin a new year, I am honored to serve as the new President of HGMS and excited about what lies ahead for our organization.  2026 will offer us many opportunities to grow our membership and strengthen the benefits we offer our long-term members.

This year, the Board will focus on enhancing our educational outreach, becoming more visible in our community and ensuring that HGMS offers plenty of fun and engagement for all the age groups in our club.  From programs and classes to outreach events and our annual Show, there is much to look forward to.

I encourage you to stay engaged, share your ideas, and take part in the many ways HGMS brings people together through a shared love of earth science. Thank you for your continued involvement and support—I look forward to working with you in the year ahead.

Regards,
Jeanean Slamen
President, Houston Gem & Mineral Society

Pink Diamonds from Lesotho

by Sigrid Stewart

Significant finds of pink diamonds in Lesotho:

  • A Type IIa 39 carat “Fancy Intense Pink” diamond was found in 2023 at the Kao mine.
  • The Graff Lesotho Pink . a 33-carat rough pink diamond from Letseng was found in 2019.
  • Pink Storm (2013): A 36.06-carat fancy pink diamond found at the Kao mine.
  • Pink Dawn & Pink Palesa (both 2021): These finds from the Kao mine weighed 25.97 and 21.86 carats respectively.
  • Rose of Kao (2018): a 29.59-carat pink diamond, also from the Kao mine.

Why are they so special?

  • Pink diamonds are very rare, only a tiny percentage of the rough diamonds found.
  • Many of Lesotho’s pinks are Type IIa, clear and without flaws.
  • Their unique pink hue comes from distortions in their crystal lattice, not from chemical impurities as in other colored diamonds.
  • Studies show that narrow color bands created by plastic deformation change a crystal’s internal structure. The bands reveal where intense stress squeezed and stretched the lattice, long after the diamond first formed. Alternating bands of pink and clear diamond can also create problems for facetors.

They are so special it is hard to find non-commercial photographs of them!

See the brochure:

https://www.mining-outlook.com/mining-brochures/storm-mountain-diamonds-brochure

Significant mines:

  • The Kao Mine in the Butha-Buthe district is operated by Storm Mountain Diamonds (jointly owned with the Lesotho Govt.) The source is Africa’s largest kimberlite pipe.
  • The Letseng Mine is also famous for producing large, high-quality diamonds, including famous pink diamonds.

Lesotho, a small mountainous country surrounded by South Africa, announced the discovery of the “spectacular fancy intense pink diamond.” With a weight of 108.39 carats, the diamond is believed to be one of the largest pink diamonds in history. Storm Mountain Diamonds, which is owned by Namakwa Diamonds Limited and the Government of Lesotho, is an important contributor to growth and is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council.

These finds are also significant because the previous source for pink diamonds, Australia’s Argyle Mine, closed in 2020, reducing the supply of this rare and popular color.

Foredom Maintenance

If you have a Foredom flexshaft, it makes sense to check it over every so often to be sure it’s running properly.  But how to do that?  You’ve probably lost the little booklet that came with the unit. Well, being the good company it is, Foredom has put together an extensive set of instructions on how to do everything.

The series covers set-up, lubrication, replacing a sheath, motor maintenance, and handpiece maintenance. Few if any special tools are needed. You can access it at  https://www.foredom.net/product-category/maintenance-and-replacement-parts/. Any repair parts needed are available from the Foredom site or from many jewelry supply catalogs. If you have any question about their products, a phone call or an email will get quick answers.

Just a Drop

Hobby shops and model airplane stores carry small plastic dispenser bottles that are handy for putting a drop of flux, oil, or glue just where you want it. They have a length of small metal tubing coming out the top that lets you squeeze out very small drops.

I use one with a short length of tubing for oil when I’m sawing or when drilling harder metals like steel.  Another bottle I found in a plastics store has a longer length of metal tubing on it.

Plastics people use them for dispensing fast drying glues to join pieces of acrylic. The long metal tube lets you reach into tight places. Either of these is handy for flux at the soldering station.

Field Trip News - Midlothian Pyrite!

from Mike Sommers

After 6 long years, I’ve finally arranged a pyrite collecting trip for the club at Martin Marietta quarry in Midlothian! This will be on January 17, 2026. Just to reiterate, this one will be a PYRITE trip (back to the south wall of the quarry), there are few fossils and no shark teeth to speak of. There will be (probably) a shark tooth trip in March.

There are a limited number of spots available but I’ve never had a “sell out” so hopefully this won’t be an issue. If you want to be in the PYRITE trip, email me.

Send a NEW email with subject line “Midlothian Trip.” You MUST include how many people are in your party. Kids are OK as long as they’re around 8 and have to be supervised at all times. When I get your email I’ll reply with more details.

2025 Scholarships

by Michael Sommers

For the 2025-2026 academic year, the Houston Gem and Mineral Society is pleased to announce the award of three (3) $2,500 scholarships to deserving students in or from the Houston region! We received a record 16 applications this year, besting our previous record in 2022 by 1. This record was possibly improved by initiating an online application process using Google Forms. There were many more well-qualified candidates than we are able to assist. Of course, while we are disappointed that we cannot help each of them, we are pleased to lessen the financial burden of achieving educational goals for the following awardees:

Kyra is a first-year Master’s student in Geology at the University of Houston. Her research combines machine learning with petroleum geochemistry with the desired outcome of enhancing analytics and classification of oil sample characteristics to produce more efficient, accurate and sustainable exploration practices.  She hopes to join the energy industry after graduation. Kyra has been a member of HGMS for the past four years, and volunteered at the annual show. In the words of her advisor and recommender Dr. Jagos Radovic, Kyra’s “dedication to both research and public engagement exemplifies the spirit of this [HGMS] scholarship.”

We couldn’t agree more and we are thrilled to award it to her!

“Thank you and the Houston Gem and Mineral Society so much! – Kyra”

Kyra Bennett

Skylin is an undergraduate at Sam Houston State who has loved dinosaurs and paleontology ever since she was little, growing up with a stuffed orange triceratops. A few years ago on a family vacation to Bryce Canyon National Park she met a geologist hired to study rockfall in the canyons, and later the same day at Cedar Breaks National Monument she talked with a woman hired to do talks on the geology of the monument who told her how much she loved doing the talks. Skylin immediately knew what she wanted as a career – to be a geologist! She visited Sam Houston State University where she found out about the GET TX (Geoscience Exposure and Training in Texas) Program. She applied and was accepted, one of only 12 out of 150 to do so, and it was in that experience she confirmed she wanted to pursue paleontology. She is on track to graduate with her Bachelor’s next summer and then pursue a Master’s in invertebrate paleontology. She has been studying Pliocene age clams since 2024, presenting her research at a conference and getting hired as a research assistant to continue that project. Her recommender, Dr. Joeseph Hill, exclaimed she has a “natural curiosity” and is “an extremely hard worker” who does well because she has a passion to learn.

“Thank you so much for selecting me as a scholarship recipient! – Skylin.”

Thank you for your dedication, and we’re glad to help!

Safiye is a Houston native just finishing her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin in Environmental Science with a minor in Business and Public Policy. She grew up in Houston exploring trails around Armand Bayou and learning to appreciate wetland ecosystems and how society interacts with them. Experience with Hurricane Harvey, watching her neighborhood flood, and seeing infrastructure collapse,  displacing neighbors, shaped her awareness of the connection between environmental challenges and public policy. It  sparked her desire to study Earth Science in order to utilize that knowledge to protect both natural resources and the communities which depend on them. She has interned with an environmental consulting firm and worked as a legal intern specializing in environmental compliance. This summer Safiye interned in Mexico with the Office of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, part of a study validating the accuracy and reliability of laboratory methods used by elements of the Mexican government while conducting environmental compliance. Her recommender, Dr. David Eaton, called this work “highly unique and will be helpful for both the Mexican and US governments.” Her next step after graduation will be to attend law school with an end goal of practicing environmental law.

“I am incredibly honored to be selected as a recipient of the 2025 HGMS Earth Science/Jewelry Arts Scholarship. Please extend my deepest thanks to the full scholarship committee. I am truly grateful for your support and encouragement. – Safiye”

We are honored to help support your goals and to help make our environment a little better!

Safiye Namver

I would like to take this time to personally thank fellow committee member Nancy English, who is stepping down from her role on this committee after having volunteered with me for these past 11 years. She is such a tirelessly cheerful, good meaning, pleasant, loving person, and her support has been immeasurably valuable. Our fellow hale and hearty, enthusiastic, and immensely personable volunteer Daniel Rodriguez and I will miss having you by our side in this task, but look forward to continuing with new volunteer Karl Schleicher for the 2026-2027 scholarship. Anyone else with any interest in serving, please let me know!

2025 Vocano News

by Sigrid Stewart

If you are interested in volcanoes, there is a great website you could be looking at to see just who is having a hot time! This site lists volcanoes by region, with maps, photos, background stories and past eruptions, and information about earthquakes as well. They even sponsor volcano tours.

Kiluea eruptions are on-gong, with lava fountains!

Erta Ale and Ale Bagu in Ethiopia, and Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo are erupting.

Mt. Etna in Sicily erupted earlier this year and is erupting right now. It is the most active volcano in Europe and has been studied for 2000 years.  Stromboli, on an island north of Sicily, is also active now.

Marapi in Indonesia is only one of 16 volcanoes currently erupting in that country. The deadliest eruption of modern times was at Krakatau (Krakatoa), which is showing some activity.

Taal, a beautiful example of a caldera with a lake located in the Philippines, has a history of dangerous explosions and pyroclastic flows – active now.

There are new lava flows at Home Reef, a new island in Tonga, 60 miles from the site of the very powerful eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai in 2022. There is a crazy satellite photo animation of that eruption on this site.

Taal Volcano

Krasheninnikov volcano on Kamchatka, Russia is showing new lava flows, and 3 others are also erupting on the peninsula.

Japan has its share, with 6 active volcanoes.

Mexico has Popocatepetl, Guatemala has 2, Costa Rica has 2 and Nicaragua has 4.

Columbia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Ecuador all have volcanic activity.

Something is always erupting in Alaska, but nothing major right now!

OLD BUSINESS

During the July 1 Board meeting, we discussed outdoor lighting. Nancy English contacted Audrey Kelly at Coir Property, our business park management company. “Dunn Southwest (Business Park) takes care of the 2 LED lights near the overhead doors – these are considered common areas. Anything else is the owner’s choice to alter or replace. Dunn Southwest has recently started replacing the old LEDs with more powerful lights as they burn out.”

If we need a replacement, we will send a pic, and they will take care of it.

If we want to add lights, there is no issue or need to ask for permission.

Ray Kizer said we need a brighter light under the awning. We probably need to hardwire it through the building wall.

NEW BUSINESS

Membership Process Improvements: Sarah Mesta is planning these changes in 2026.

  • Paper-based memberships are an ongoing challenge. Sarah would like to encourage members to use the online application if possible.
    • For this, she proposes to come to the club several weekends during January as a “membership renewal day.” She will help people get their memberships done electronically. This will cut down on the paper applications as well as remind people to renew.
    • Before I roll this out, does this sound like an acceptable plan? The Board agreed.
  • Sarah is planning New Membership Welcome Parties. The first is on January 24, 2026.
    • She will cover some history.
    • Go over some rules.
    • She has speakers lined up for brief talks about Sections.
  • This is all part of her January Membership drive.

Tasks and Timelines: Sarah Metsa is planning to make a list of tasks and the times they are due or should be started. This may be a committee and would meet outside of the Board meetings.

  • Formalize Policies and Procedures.
  • Engage a volunteer to function as an HGMS Historian.
  • Engage a volunteer to be the Librarian.
  • Organize warranties and save electronically.

Restripe parking lot: Maggie Manley plans to measure the parking lot to see if diagonal parking spaces would offer more parking in our lot.

Safety Posters: July Olsen is committed to making professional safety posters for the Shop.

New Field Trip Committee: Sarah Metsa is creating a Field Trip committee for all members, not specifically tied to Paleo or Mineral Section members. They had their first meeting. Allison and Matthew Sklar, and others attended. They are putting together a plan for the first Trip. There will be more information after the New Year.

The next Board of Directors Zoom meeting is on the first Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. January 6, 2026.

The next General Meeting will be on the fourth Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. January 27, 2026.

Program topic: Moon rocks/dust. Presented by Jessica Bamford

Adjourn: Fred Brueckner moved to adjourn. Ray Kizer seconded the motion, and it passed. The meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

Respectfully submitted
